Terms of Membership

  1. Membership of BUHABS entitles you to sign-up for ballooning trips with BUHABS while your membership is valid. It also entitles you to receive the society's newsletter and to attend the society's AGM.
  2. Membership of BUHABS costs £35 and expires on September 30th.
  3. Unless you are rejoining BUHABS from the previous membership period, you will start your membership with zero crewing points. See point 9 for details on crewing points.
  4. You may sign up for one slot per weekend during term time. Signing-up takes place on a Thursday as advertised. You may sign up for additional slots on Friday if there are spaces. You may only sign-up once per slot. You may only put your name down as driver if you are an approved BUHABS driver.
  5. You are expected to phone-in within five minutes of the time specified if you have signed-up for a slot. If you do not phone-in the flight may have to be cancelled. You may be deducted two crewing points for not phoning-in.
  6. You will be expected to meet at a location specified at the phone-in. This will usually be Parry's Lane or the Students' Union half an hour later than the phone-in time.
  7. Flights are weather dependent and the decision to fly lies solely with the Pilot. The Pilot may cancel a flight due to safety reasons at any time during or before the trip.
  8. The choice of launch site is at the Pilot's discretion and will depend on weather conditions.
  9. When you participate in a ballooning trip those with the most crewing points will fly in the balloon. In the event that several people have the same crewing points, the Pilot will find a fair way to decide who will fly. The Pilot's decision is final. If you fly in the balloon you will be charged £20 to cover a share of the cost of the flight. In addition you will be deducted one crewing point. If you follow the balloon in the retrieve vehicle you will not be charged. In this case you will be awarded one crewing point. BUHABS keeps a central record of crewing points.
  10. The Pilot has complete discretion to refuse to fly you if he/she deems you to be unfit to fly. You may not fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You should not fly if you are seriously ill, have recently undergone surgery or are pregnant. It is your responsibility to make sure you are fit to fly.
  11. BUHABS does not accept any liability for damage or loss to items brought on ballooning trips.
  12. You will not be allowed to touch any of the flying controls at any time during the flight.
  13. Your safety is BUHABS' main concern, and you will be expected to follow all instructions from the Pilot.
  14. The length of the flight is solely at the discretion of the Pilot.
  15. All BUHABS Pilots have current UK pilot's licences and are members of BUHABS, the BBAC and WRBBAC.
  16. The balloon is registered in the UK and has a valid certificate of airworthiness, and third party insurance cover.
  17. The retrieve vehicle has a current MOT certificate and third party insurance cover. All approved BUHABS drivers must be over 21.
  18. Membership of BUHABS is not a guarantee of a flight. BUHABS offers more than sufficient flying opportunities during the membership year to fly all of its members. The responsibility for signing-up for ballooning trips lies with you and you should actively seek opportunities to participate. BUHABS ballooning is the full sport experience including the work of crewing and retrieving and you should expect to retrieve and fly in roughly equal proportions - you may well not fly on your first time out with the balloon.
