Ballooning in the UK is slit up in to many regions. Here in Bristol we are covered by the Western Region of the BBAC. They have regular meetings about many different types of topics.
This meeting is about the Gordon Bennet Gas balloon race. The event will be full of balloonists from around the area. Food will be available before the start of the meeting.
BUHABS will organise transport to the location which is the The Compass Inn just off the M4 junction. We can take about eight people in the van but can probably get more transport if necessary. Probably leave from the Union around 1930 ish...
Western Region is pleased to announce that there has been a change of programmed speaker for the November monthly meeting (Monday 2nd November, 8pm, The Compass Inn, Tormarton, just off M4 junction 18).
We will have an evening devoted to the Gordon Bennett gas balloon race – 2009 and 2010.
The main speaker is Janet Folkes, who together with Ann-Ruth Webb, flew an outstanding race in September 2009. They finished in sixth place, flying from Geneva to near Madrid, including two nights in the air, one of which was over the Mediterranean Sea. During this epic, they broke the world women’s duration record. Janet will explain about the race and the tactics in a year when balloons ended up in Italy, Algeria, Spain and Portugal.
The UK will host the launch of the race next year and the BBAC has formed GB2010 Ltd to run the event. Don Cameron will explain about the plans so far for 2010 and how the ballooning community can get involved and support the event – which might launch from Western Region.
Food is available at the Compass Inn prior to the meeting.
