Committee
The BUHABS committee is the heart of the club. There are several post (detailed below) which come up for grabs each year at the AGM. If positions are not filled at this time, they can be done at a later date by co-opting people onto the committee.
If you are a current (or indeed prospective) member, but wish to become more involved with BUHABS than just going on a few flights and socials, why not join the committee? Apart from the usual selling points of 'good for your CV' etc (which it is), it is not too demanding on your time (unlike others) and is also an excellent way to get to know the most active people in the club. Many people go on to serve multiple terms because they enjoy it so much.
Committee Roles
| President | The president's responsibility is the smooth running of the society. The position involves helping other committee members when needed, chairing meetings and keeping members informed about the societies activities. The president is usually the first point of contact with the Society and has to be able to channel information and requests for action quickly and efficiently to the relevant members of the committee. The position needs some level of organisation and oversight ability. As a result, this position is eligible for the Bristol Plus Award (Outstanding Achievement) and looks fab on the CV. The position is only open to those holding a student union card (current student). |
| Secretary | The secretary is responsible for liaison with sponsors and other external bodies, keeping minutes and other official society business such as keeping membership records and organising committee meetings. This position is eligible for the Bristol Plus Award. |
| Flying Treasurer | The flying treasurer is responsible for the money we receive from our sponsors. This includes co-ordinating with the union treasurer to pay the balloon insurance and funding of any events we do for the sponsors. The position also involves keeping the flying accounts including purchasing our fuel supply. Experience is required with liquid propane. Thus, this position is normally taken by a pilot. |
| Transport Officer | The transport officer is responsible for cleaning, insurance, tax and maintenance of the van, trailer and compound. |
| Social Secretary | The social secretary helps the president write regular newsletters and organises social events. |
| Union Treasurer | The union treasurer is responsible for handling our general expenses and administering our online payment system (only society in Bristol Uni). They are also responsible for financial planning and organising grant and sponsorship deals. This post is not open to students in their final year. This position is eligible for the Bristol Plus Award. |
| Website Guru | The website maintenance officer is responsible for the design and upkeep of the website including artwork, graphics and content. A great position for the undiscovered artist! |
| Safety Officer | The safety officer is responsible for organising first aid training, fire awareness training and driver training. They are also responsible for the continuing review of health and safety procedures and the accompanying paperwork. |
| Flight Organiser | It involves organising pilots and drivers for flights and creating the flights on the website for members to sign up to. This position is normally undertaken by the pilots on a rota system. |
| UWE Rep | This position involves helping to attract members from UWE and feeding back their comments. |
| Staff/Graduate Rep | This position involves helping to attract staff members and feeding back their comments. |
| Postgraduate Rep | This position involves helping to attract postgraduate members and feeding back their comments. |
